Background of the Study
E-commerce has revolutionized retail landscapes worldwide, and Nigeria is no exception. The efficiency of e-commerce logistics, which includes warehousing, transportation, order fulfillment, and last-mile delivery, is crucial for the seamless operation of online retail businesses (Oluwaseun, 2023). In Nigeria, where traditional retail infrastructure faces numerous challenges, efficient e-commerce logistics can bridge the gap between consumer expectations and service delivery, thereby boosting retail efficiency and customer satisfaction. Investments in logistics technology, automation, and supply chain management have the potential to transform retail operations by reducing delivery times, minimizing errors, and lowering operational costs (Chukwu, 2024).
Retailers in Nigeria are increasingly leveraging digital platforms to reach a broader market, yet the success of these initiatives largely depends on the reliability of the logistics network. The complexity of Nigeria’s transportation systems, coupled with infrastructural challenges, often leads to delays and increased operational costs. As a result, effective logistics management becomes a competitive differentiator for e-commerce platforms striving to gain consumer trust and loyalty (Adeniyi, 2023). Furthermore, technological advancements such as real-time tracking systems, automated warehouses, and data analytics are being integrated to optimize logistics operations and streamline supply chains. However, despite these advancements, several challenges persist, including regulatory bottlenecks, infrastructural deficits, and security concerns that affect the efficiency of logistics operations (Ibrahim, 2025).
The interplay between e-commerce logistics and retail efficiency is a critical area of interest for policymakers and business leaders alike. By understanding how logistics improvements translate into enhanced retail performance, stakeholders can better formulate strategies that foster growth in the digital retail sector. This study aims to investigate the impact of e-commerce logistics on retail efficiency in Nigeria by examining the effectiveness of current logistics practices, identifying key challenges, and proposing solutions that can improve service delivery and operational efficiency in the retail industry.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the rapid growth of e-commerce in Nigeria, the efficiency of retail operations is often compromised by shortcomings in the logistics network. A major issue is the inconsistency in the quality of delivery services, which results from infrastructural challenges, inadequate last-mile delivery systems, and regulatory inefficiencies (Eze, 2023). These problems lead to delayed deliveries, damaged goods, and higher operational costs, ultimately diminishing customer satisfaction and eroding trust in e-commerce platforms. Furthermore, the fragmented nature of Nigeria’s logistics sector makes it difficult for retailers to integrate efficient supply chain solutions into their operations.
In addition, the lack of advanced technological integration in logistics processes further exacerbates inefficiencies. Many e-commerce retailers struggle with outdated tracking systems and manual processes that hinder timely order fulfillment and error resolution (Ijeoma, 2024). Security issues, such as theft and fraudulent activities during transportation, also pose significant risks that affect the reliability of logistics services. The cumulative effect of these challenges is a reduction in retail efficiency, which undermines the potential benefits of e-commerce growth in Nigeria.
This study seeks to address these issues by critically evaluating the current state of e-commerce logistics and its impact on retail efficiency. By identifying the bottlenecks and areas for improvement, the research aims to propose practical strategies to enhance logistics performance and, in turn, improve overall retail operations in Nigeria.
